Is JU VC on his way out? | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 20: Under attack from multiple fronts, Vice Chancellor Jammu University is mulling over his resignation, divulge insiders, adding that he has already offered to put up his papers more than once in recent past. Prof. RD Sharma, came under scathing attack over the controversy regarding a function proposed to be organized by ABVP, which was precluded by him. He was summoned by the Chancellor, NN Vohra, in Srinagar the previous day to seek information on turn of events over the issue. Vohra, who is a seasoned administrator, is believed to have expressed his displeasure over the growing dissent within the University fraternity against the VC. Highly placed sources in the University divulge that the entire episode of the proposed ABVP function was mishandled by the VC and his coterie and the sharp voices of dissent resonated even in the corridors of power in New Delhi besides Srinagar. "This was not the first time that such a function was proposed to be held in JU. NSUI, the student wing of the Congress had organized a function in JU during the previous Government in which then JKPCC president, Saifuddin Soz had participated. Similarly, in another function organized by NCSU, the student's wing of National Conference, in Urdu department, NC's provincial president, Devendra Singh Rana had participated" said a senior officer of the University pleading not to be named. "Prof. R D Sharma had been knocking at the doors of RSS and BJP leaders seeking their patronage for his appointment as VC JU, and now that he got what he wanted, he is affording ill will of same people who used their good offices to help him" he added. Denial of permission to ABVP by the VC and its fall out has meanwhile infuriated the Dy Chief Minister Prof. Nirmal Singh, and even the Chief Minister and Pro Chancellor Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. Besides, several organizations of students and scholars are vehemently opposing him for his selective, discriminatory and dictatorial approach to several administrative issues within the University. "His approach towards Directorate of Distance Education (DDE), B Ed colleges and Centre for Human Genetics has come under sharp criticism from all and sundry" said a student leader of the University. "Favouritism has been at galore in JU. While blue eyed junior officers have been appointed at positions equivalent to those of senior professors, others have been targeted, harassed and humiliated. Certain officers have even accused the VC of embattled approach against officers belonging to minority communities" he added. |
