BJP sweeps LAHDC polls; wins 18 seats Congress bags 5, NC gets 2 seats

srinagar, Oct 23: The Bhartiya Janta Pary today swept the elections for the 26-member Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Leh, bagging 18 of the 26 seats.
Talking to the Early Times over phone from Leh Assistant Commissioner (Rev) Sunil Kumar said that BJP has won 18 seats while Congress, managed five seats this time while National Conference got two.
He said that one seat was won by an Independent.
The officials said that counting for 26 seats of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh was taken up at the Government Degree College, Leh and completed by around 7. 30 pm.
He said that total seats required for majority in the Council is 16 in the House of 30. Election was held for 26 seats only while four Councilors are nominated by the Government with voting rights in the House.
Sources said that as PDP-BJP is ruling the State, they will nominate the four Councilors owing affiliation to the two parties. "Now wining majority of seats it will be for the first time, BJP to head the Council in district of Leh.
Officials said that this was fifth election to the LAHDC Leh. "Of previous four elections, starting from 1995, Congress had won three while Leh Union Territory Front (LUTF) had formed the Council once. The BJP had never been in power in the LAHDC Leh," .
A total of 90 contestants were in fray for the elections to 26 seats.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner, Leh, Prasanna Ramaswamy, told Early Times that the counting was held in smooth atmosphere. "We start the counting for 13 seats (No. 16 to 26 i.e. Leh and surroundings) in the first phase at 8 am, which was completed around 12 noon. The second phase (i.e. from 1-13 seats) was taken up from 1 pm onwards and was completed by 4 pm. Counting of all seats was over by 7 pm," he said.
Meanwhile the poll victory was hailed by the Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh who expressed his gratitude to the people of the region for reposing their faith in BJP.
"Our party is delighted at the results of Ladakh Hill Council Polls. We are thankfull to the people of Leh for placing their faith in BJP," Nirmal Singh said.
It is to mention here that the party had won the Lok Sabha polls last year from Ladakh Constituency, the lone seat in the region, by dislodging Congress.
