Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 23: The BJP, an ally in the PDP-led coalition Government in J&K, has said it would welcome Mehbooba Mufti as next Chief Minister of the State if her father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed decides to step down.
A top BJP leader said though his party has no information about Mehbooba replacing her father as CM, the party leadership feels there is no harm if the Muftis decide so.
"We really don't have any information about the issue. As far as Mehbooba is concerned, she is a dynamic leader and most popular face of the State. Hence BJP is not going to challenge any decision of Mufti," the BJP leader told Early Times on the condition of anonymity.
PDP sources however said the move might not go down well with a section of the party leadership that is pressing for its inclusion in Union Ministry.
"There is clear-cut direction form PDP patron Mufti Sayeed not to challenge the authority of Mehbooba. However, there are some leaders within the party who might oppose the move," a source in PDP told Early Times.
Notably, Mufti has made it clear to the party leaders that Mehbooba will continue to lead the party and possibly the Government as well. He had also made it clear that no one will be allowed to challenge her authority.
"He has made it clear to leaders that any kind of dissent will not be tolerated. And also that people have reposed faith in the policies and programs and leadership of Mufti and Mehbooba and not to any other individual, and it should be clear to all the leaders," said the source.
He said Mehbooba is tipped to be the next Chief Minister of the State and her father and CM Mufti may step down "within few weeks".
On the other hand, the BJP leader said the agenda of alliance between the coalition partners is based on development and equality. Hence Mehbooba's taking over as the CM will not affect the accord in any manner.
"As I already said BJP is unaware of any such issue. However, there would be no differences between BJP and PDP if Mehbooba will lead the Government. Our leadership has reposed its faith and trust in Mufti's leadership and no one will challenge his decision," he said.
