Jammu Province: A misnomer | | Zahoor Ahmed Wani | 10/24/2015 1:12:24 AM |
| A vibrant civil society is a sign of prosperous nation. Recent dilemma of setting up of AIIMS in Kashmir valley has been met out with series of protests and Band calls in Jammu by the jammunites as they demand for another AIIMS in Jammu. To intensify the agitation a coordination committee in the name of "AIIMS coordination committee" was formed by the civil society of Jammu. The impact of the formation of this coordination committee was apparently observed with BJP who is coalition partner to the incumbent govt in the state, openly coming in support of their demand and even some leaders announce setting up of AIIMS in Jammu and the State Govt also conducting a round of talks with the coordination committee. But during all these events everyone beit a politician, civil society members, or media, all are talking of setting up of AIIMS in Jammu district and no one is talking of Jammu province as a whole. Jammu province include a vast range of Chenab Valley with 3 big districts viz Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban, and another vast range of PirPanjal region including 3 districts viz Poonch, Rajouri and Reasi, and remaining 3 districts are Jammu, Udhampur and Samba. However irony of the fact is that the two regions viz Chenab valley and Pirpanjal range which comprise of 2/3rd of the Jammu province both in area as well as population are always side-lined when we talk of Jammu. The main reason for such discrimination with these two regions is not only the biased approach of the successive Govts in State and Centre, but more importantly it's the politicians, media and civil society of these two regions who have not been vibrant and dynamic enough to raise their voice to meet their demands. If these regions are to be transformed then all these institutions should wake up from deep slumber and raise voice for their due share. Be it IIT, IIM or Biotechnology park, etc all have been distributed to two districts of Jammu and Samba. So now it's the turn of AIIMS and if the situation remains the same then it will also go to the kitty of the same districts which have always been benefitted. Let this time be a change and an equitable distribution of such institutions to all the three regions of Jammu province by allocating AIIMS to Chenab valley and an IIT to PirPanjal region. This will not only embolden the unity of the region but also pave a way for equitable development of all the regions which is paramount for the stability of the wholejammu province.
