Crackdown on separatists is part of political tradition | | | When in the opposition politicians cherish berating the ruling party or the ruling alliance for various ills forgetting that when they were in power they committed the same mistakes for which they hold the ruling party responsible. This is what has been witnessed in Kashmir during the last several years. During the summer of 2010 the then Government headed by Omar Abdullah, had attracted severe criticism for initiating measures which had resulted in the death of about 120 civilians, most of them teenagers, in clashes between the protesters and the security forces. At that stage Omar had justified the Government action on the plea that had not the security agencies acted against the rowdy elements the valley would have been on fire. By fire he had meant that more killings could have rocked the valley. During that summer several hundred people were put in prisons and all of them were neither the separatists nor their supporters. Majority of those arrested were simply detained on charge of indulging in stoning police, security forces and the Government vehicles. And if Omar favoured stern action against the protesters he was not wrong because any leniency could have triggered bigger violence leading to total derailment of peace in Kashmir. And if the PDP-BJP coalition Government has decided to deal firmly with the separatists who have given a call for "million march" to counter Modi's upcoming rally. Criticizing Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed for arresting separatist leaders, opposition National Conference working president Omar Abdullah has said this has opened the pandora's box of intolerance which is very scary. Taking to micro blogging site twitter, Omar said "Mufti Sayeed is right PM's 7th Nov Srinagar rally will be historic - for the number of people arrested to make the rally possible. "Sayeed, during a public meeting yesterday, had said that Modi's visit to Kashmir will be historic." The pandora's box of intolerance that has been opened in the last few months will resonate for long years to come and that is very scary," Omar added. After retweeting on the crackdown on separatists ahead of the PM's visit, Omar said, "thus exposing the complete hollowness of Mufti Sayeed "battle of ideas" slogan!!! Omar's dig against the Mufti is based on sarcasm because he (Omar) believes that Modi's upcoming visit to Srinagar could be historic with the number of separatists either behind the bars or under the house arrest. Does Omar Abdullah favour gory scenes in Kashmir onNovember 7 when the separatists and their supporters were bound to trigger scenes of violence which could force the security forces to resort to lathicharge, teargassing and even to firing. Once the security forces were compelled to act fast and furious there would be no end to bigger conflict, trouble, tension leading to scenes of death on the roads. Does Omar Abdullah want it? If he does not want people to get killed let him allow the state Government to keep most of the separatists under safe custody in prisons or in their houses guarded by security personnel. On how many occasions Omar Abdullah, when he headed a coalition Government between 2008 and 2014 ordered a crackdown on separatists? Does Omar Abdullah have some record with him? Omar Abdullah claims that during the six years he headed the Government incidents of militancy related violence and the activities of separatists had witnessed down the hill journey. Has it happened on its own. No, It was the result of counter insurgency operations and the previous Government's okay to such measures that the level of violence had decreased. In fact the practice of placing separatist leaders under house arrest on various occasions had been started during the time Omar headed the Government. Why then he should blame the Mufti led Government if some aort of crackdown has been ordered against the separatists who have plans to destabilize peace and security stability in Kashmir. Whatever measures the Government has initiated against the separatists are for a temporary period. |
