PDP works overnight for Kashmir-specific package, BJP leadership in deep slumber
11/4/2015 12:24:07 AM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 3: While the ruling PDP is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that Prime Minister Narendra Modi announces a Kashmir-specific package during his visit to Srinagar on November 7, the coalition partner BJP has failed to make any such effort for the people of Jammu who voted the party to power.
Highly placed sources said the PDP leadership is lobbying in the PM's Office New Delhi so that the package, which is scheduled to be announced by Modi, "best suits the needs of Kashmir province."
Two of Cabinet Ministers from the PDP are understood to be in touch with the PMO over the announcement of the package and are sharing updates with the party high command.
Sources said the PDP president Mehbooba Mufti and her father, Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, during the party meeting here on October 21, were surprised to see how the party leadership was more concerned about the interests of people of Kashmir.
Sources said the party leaders, mostly legislators, have submitted a detailed list of demands, which they want the PM to meet in the interest of people of Kashmir. From employment to financial assistance for the flood-hit people to improvement of road connectivity and other infrastructure, the PDP has asked for everything.
"The demands also include jobs for unemployed, apart from construction of a ring road in the summer capital Srinagar," sources said.
The PDP leadership has also sought better road connectivity between Kashmir and Doda regions apart from upgradation of other infrastructure in the region.
"There's even a demand to declare Pul Doda exit (Pul Doda) Desa-Gai-Hingipora-Kapran-Verinag road in Doda and Anantnag as National Highway," sources said.
While the PDP is concerned about their constituency, there seems no such enthusiasm in BJP that represents Jammu.
Even though on October 31, the National General Secretary of BJP Ram Madhav visited Kashmir and discussed Modi's visit with the state chapter of the party leadership, insiders said no one looked bothered about the interests of Jammu.
The meeting chaired by Madhav was attended by State BJP president and MP Jugal Kishore, Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh, General Secretary Organization, Ashok Koul, BJP Ministers Chandra Parkash Ganga, Priya Sethi, and party spokesman Khalid Jehangir.
But the party leadership didn't even discuss the delay in establishment of much-needed AIIMS in Jammu while the burning demand of revocation of tax imposed on Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage was also ignored.
Despite making repeated assurances to the people of Jammu, the BJP has failed to revoke the tax on the pilgrimage. Even the ongoing development projects in Jammu have been witnessing hiccups. While the work on construction of artificial lake was stopped for sometime, the expansion of Jammu airport has missed the September deadline.
Amid so much of apparent neglect and unfulfilled promises in Jammu, Modi has chosen not to address any rally in the winter capital.
