KUPWARA, Nov 13: A gunfight broke out between a group of LeT militants and security forces at Manigah area of Haihama area in Kupwara district of north Kashmir on Friday afternoon. According to senior police official, "on a tip of information about the presence of militants in the forest area of Manigah, the joint team of Army's 41 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and police cordoned off the whole village. The forces intensified the cordon and search operation, after which several gunshots were fired towards the suspected spot, adding the militants are believed to be three to four in number were hiding in the area, opened fire triggering of an encounter, the official added. However reliable sources told Early Times that, an Army jawan was injured in an encounter with militants in the forests of Kupwara district in north Kashmir on Friday. Sources said the injured jawan has been airlifted to an Army hospital in Drugmulla in Kupwara district for advanced treatment. "An encounter broke out at around 3.35 PM between security forces and militants in forests of Hajinaka in Kupwara district, sources added. However a senior police official said that an army jawan was injured in the initial exchange of firing between the two sides, adding that the operation was in progress when reports last came in, official added. It is pertinent to mention here that Army had claimed on Tuesday late evening that, Body of a Lashkar-e Toiba militant, Sijad Bhai of Multan Pakistan was recovered near the Line of Control in Kupwara district by Army. A senior police official said that, "The body was found by Army troops of 41 RR during a search operation which was going on in forest areas of Trumnad and Kumkadi in Safawali sector near the Line of Control (LoC) since past two days. "After conducting searches in the vast forest areas, the army in the evening recovered the body along with a rifle from a deep gorge, the official said. The body was taken to the 41 RR headquarter and later handed over to concerned police station for legal formalities. However the police said that the cause of death was yet to be ascertained, however, the initial investigations revealed that the "militant" might had slipped during heavy rains last week and fallen into the gorge. "A case has been registered and further investigations have been taken up. |
