JP Co retrenches 700 workers from Baglihar Project | Workers go to indefinite stir demanding compensation as per agreement | | Danish Muzafar Early Times Report
Banihal, Nov 13: After the completion of maximum execution work on Baglihar Hydro Electric Project situated on Chenab in Chanderkote of Ramban district, M/s JP Associates Company engaged for the construction of the project retrenched more than 700 skilled semi- skilled and unskilled workers on Thursday. Meantime the retrenched employees have opted the agitaional path and are demanding due compensation as per the agreement. Pertinent to mention that company has sent 175 staff employees including engineers, supervisors, foremen and other staff members on force leave up to indefinite time period. The retrenched workers and the staff members including engineers who were send to forced leave staged a protest demonstration against the company management for demanding the final retrenchment compensation as per the agreement and said that workers who were retrenched earlier have got of 6.5 percent basic pay of per year. Union leaders of the company also alleged that the company management refused the agreement do with the labour union agreement in 2008. The workers started their indefinite protest in front of their Union office in Power house under the banner of Chenab hydro power project workers union (CHPPWU) and demanding the final retrenchment compensation according to the agreement with the union. The leaders of the union more said that company is mulling proposal to give only 1.5 percent of basic pay wages as notice pay as Labour Law of 1947 which is unacceptable for the retrenched workers. The protesting workers said that there protest remains continue until the company will not full fill their demands and agreement of 6.5 percent basic pays of per year. When contacted an official with the management of company on anonymity said that maximum retrenched workers are engaged through the contractors and in which many of them are re engaged by the company. “The maximum work on the project is completed and they have no requirement of workers now, he said and added that the company already had paid all the balanced amount to the workers in 2008 when the first phase of the project was completed and that agreement was made for the phase first. The official also said that the all the allegations labelled on company by the workers are false baseless and their protest is illegal.
