Police officers part of illegal trade, allege "high-profile" gamblers | | | Early Times Report jammu, Nov 13: The "high-profile" gamblers, who landed in police net on the eve of Diwali two days back, are alleged to have told their interrogators that some police officers were too part of the illegal activity. They were taken into custody by a police team led by a senior police officer during raids in Chhani Himmat, Satwari and Narwal areas. The stake money worth lakhs of rupees was seized by police during these surprise raids, according to police sources. While one of the apprehended gamblers was a frequent visitor to some top police officers, the others included a police Inspector's brother and a criminal who possessed a revolver at the time of his arrest, the sources added. Sources said though there was a lot of pressure on police not to book the high-profile and rich gamblers, the SP booked them all under the relevant sections of law. During questioning, they allegedly told police that some senior police officers, who were actively involved in the illegal gambling activity, had provided them space for gambling on the Diwali eve. They also told police that the police "officers" charged rent of the space from them, sources alleged. Sources said police were also looking into the alleged role of police "officers" in the illegal gambling activity. |
