Pollution by cement factories adversely affecting ecosystem in Udhampur | | | Ashwani Sharma Early Times Report Udhampur, Dec 1: The Jammu and Kashmir government may have right concerns about the pollution caused by the cement factories butPollution Control Board authorities in Udhampur seem to be in deep slumber as they are least concerned about the damage done to the ecosystem in the surroundings within district. Residents hailing from Rathian, Kharooni, Londana and other adjoining areas near Battal Ballian and other concerning colonies - through their representations by the elected sarpanches have submiiited their concerns over the commissioning of the new cement plants in the area that are being considered by the government. Naresh Kumar a local resident of area said, "No authority yet has been come forward to inspect the plants as the officials concerned allegedly have got their palms greased by the owners of the Cement Plants but ironically ignoring the degradation of the environment and its adverse affect on ecosystem." "State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) needs to be directed to visit the spot and conduct extensive study of the pollution caused by the cements plants, he said adding, "even the existing cement plants shall be asked to adhere to the preventive measures for controlling and abating the pollution." Underlining that the cement manufacturing activity in the area is responsible for causing air and water pollution further resulting in great ecological imbalance, the locals complained that people of the area have raised voice against the pollution as the existing cement plants had not adhered to Pollution control norms. Locals also have objected the functioning of Kashmir Cement Plant, Uma Cement Plant and etc for failing to all set norms. Further the locals also pleaded, the area is known for vegetables production which virtually has reduced because of the industrial pollution and the Rathian, Kharooni which were once famous for vegetables cultivation are getting affected. "The cement plants are being commissioned without any check which is illogical and destruction of economy of the region and affecting the socio economic status of locals," they added. "We approached different authorities including Pollution Control Board for putting a check in mushrooming of cement factories that too coming up with floating norms, local lamented and alleged the Department has adopted a cold shoulder response only. Commissioner Pollution Control Board briefly said the notices will be served to the cement plants if anyone found not adhering to norms and cautioned legal actions against erring owners of cement factories in the area. |
