Mir shortlists probable district presidents, reaches Delhi for high command approval | | | Early Time Report
Jammu, Dec 1: New district presidents of Congress in Jammu and Kashmir are likely to be announced soon as the PCC president G A Mir is learnt to have shortlisted the names of probables. After three-day long marathon meetings with PCC senior vice-president Sham Lal Sharma and others, the PCC president has rushed to New Delhi for seeking approval of the high command on the shortlisted names for new district presidents, informed well placed sources in the Congress party. Amidst speculations that Ghulam Nabi Azad, the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, was exerting pressure for getting his men accommodated as the district presidents, sources said that PCC president has tried to strike a balance in shortlisting the names. Pertinent to mention that in the list of PCC office bearers, G A Mir had virtually ignored Azad camp in Jammu and Kashmir, who were thereafter up in arms against sidelining them. Even as a strong attempt was made to pressurize Mir for getting the PCC modified with the inclusion of Azad loyalists, the PCC president refused to budge and expelled three former ministers from the Congress for their alleged anti-party activities. Even as Mir has strengthened his grip on the party by expelling Gulchain Singh Charak, Abdul Ghani Vakil and Prem Sagar Aziz, sources said that in shortlisting the names for district president, the PCC president has tried to strike a balance to avoid a revolt like situation in the party. According to the sources, Sham Lal Sharma wants his men to be accommodated as district presidents in Jammu province while Azad camp is projecting their loyalists for the district level position. In Kashmir Valley, Mir has tried to promote his own lobby by projecting new faces, sources added. However, the clear picture will emerge only after discussion of the PCC president with high command during his ongoing visit to Delhi. As Ambika Soni has been given the charge of Punjab, sources said that Azad may attempt to increase his influence in J&K affairs in the former's absence. |
