Authorities yet to repair Chadoora bridge | Damaged in 2014 floods | | Early Times Report Budgam, Dec 1: It is more than a year since the bridge on Doodh Ganga nallah in Chadoora got damaged during September 2014 floods , but the authorities have failed to undertake repairs on the bridge which is causing severe problems to the residents of around two dozen villages and towns of this central Kashmir sub division. Details available with Early Times reveal that residents of Chadoora (Budgam) and its adjoining areas are undergoing tough times as the repair work on the main bridge connecting Chadoora with Charar-i-Sharief town in central Kashmir's Budgam district is yet to start. Chadoora bridge was reconstructed only a few years ago by PWD (R&B) authorities which happens to be a key link between Srinagar and several areas of Budgam district. Locals allege that sub-standard material was used in the construction work which led to severe damage to the bridge. Another group of people allege that illegal shopping complexes constructed on the river banks choked the Doodh Ganga nallah which caused huge water pressure during 2014 floods and that ultimately damaged one of the pillars of this bridge. A temporary diversion over the stream that flows under the bridge is used for commuting. But due to the narrow stretch of road connecting with the temporary iron bridge the vehicles that travel to different areas remain stranded even for hours here. "The authorities had constructed a diversion near this bridge when the bridge was under construction , but the floods damaged the said diversion as well which has aggravated the problems for the locals. Huge traffic jams are witnessed in Chadoora town after 4pm and this continues for several hours" said a local resident Arshad Hussain Traffic is being diverted from a causeway on Doodh Ganga nallah which causes lot of inconvenience for the people. Residents of Chadoora allege that there is no proper deployment of traffic cops in Chadoora town during the evening hours and the traffic jams cause severe problems for the commuters. Residents have appealed Minister for PWD (R&B) Altaf Bukhari for his personal intervention in the matter. |
