JU's Central Library a leisure paradise for staff, others | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 8: The Central Library in Jammu university has become a hub for leisure and relaxation. The Central Library sans permanent technically trained Chief Librarian and is headed by a Professor who also happens to be the Head of Physics and Electronics Department. Sources informed Early Times that the work of the library is being looked after by the fourth class employees as the staff above class fourth is allegedly at liberty to loiter about whole day abdicating their duties after marking attendance in the morning and come back after 4 PM for marking their departure attendance. The sources said the Professor who is looking after the work of Chief Librarian seldom visits his place of work having duel charge and unable to spare more time for exercising full control on overall functioning of the Library. One of the scholars informed that that Central Library has become more commercial than professional with membership enrolment proportionately exceeding unabated as against the capacity around 500 with acute paucity of facilities for the students adding that students other than the bonafide students of the Jammu University often make their way in the Library thus making it overcrowded and depriving the genuine students of the necessary facilities and conducive atmosphere in the Library. The sources further said that two reading halls of the Library remain open throughout the night where both male and female students come for study during the day and surprisingly these halls are without CCTV cameras for monitoring, thus leaving these halls on the mercy of attendant. No senior official is available on duty to monitor and supervise the functioning of the halls which amounts to a serious lapse and speaks of gross negligent approach of the Chief Librarian. The sources said that Research Section of the Library is in a very shabby condition with research materials like Ph.D thesis and M.Phil dissertation lying scattered on the floor. Basic facilities for the students are missing there with poor cleanliness, stinking washrooms, no proper heating system, obsolete purifiers installed there. |
