As BJP fails, CM swears by Jammu's mega project | Conceived 21 years ago, Gondola project still buried in files | | Abodh Sharma Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 8: Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has finally come to the rescue of Jammu, where not a brick has been added to mega projects a year after BJP assumed power in J&K with overwhelming support of the region. In a whirlwind tour to assess progress on the mega projects of Jammu the previous day, the Chief Minister exhorted executing agencies to finish work in stipulated time, warning them against any further delays. The projects including Tawi lake, renovation of Darbargarh palace, Mubarak Mandi-Bahu Fort Gondola project, Hari Singh park and few others have been victims of lackadaisical attitude of the executing agencies and indifference of political leadership. It merits a mention that few months back when the Chief Minister had termed Tawi lake project as unviable, BJP Ministers had immediately started the damage control exercise and assured that the work on project shall start soon, but it remained mere empty recurring and no work was resumed on the prestigious project that has been stalled for close to two years now. Irrigation and Flood Control Department had revised date of completion of Tawi Lake project to March 31, 2016, while the work has remained suspended for 20 months since the work started in 2010. The department has revealed in an RTI that 95 per cent civil works and 90 per cent mechanical works have been completed and since the work started in 2010, Rs 54.68 crore have been spent on the Tawi barrage project. Despite CM's assertion, there is little possibility that the project shall meet its fresh deadline. Similarly, work on Darbargarh Palace, Jammuites share an emotional bonding with, has been hit by serious resource crunch and State Government has not been able to prevail upon the Centre to release funds for its early completion. Started in year 2007, Archeological Survey of India has been working at snail's pace. The project was taken in hand in 13th Finance Commission and an estimate of Rs 53.9 crore was projected for its restoration. Out of which, Rs 15 crore were sanctioned by Central Government so far but only Rs 8.57 crore were released, sources added. The hyped Jammu Gondola project has failed to breath out of fat files of its DPRs. The State Government had proposed a cable car project worth Rs 30 crore that aimed to connect the heritage sites like Bagh-e-Bahu, Mubarak Mandi complex, Mahamaya Temple, Bawe Wali Mata Temple, Peerkho etc. Astoundingly, the project was conceived over 20 years back, in 1995 and since then has been struck in red tapeism, administrative inertia and political indifference. These projects have potential to highlight Jammu as independent tourist destination, but unending wait for their completion has dashed hopes of a generation, besides bleeding the State exchequer profusely. |
