Murders outnumber militancy deaths in J&K | 1 murder recorded every 2 days | | Akshay Azad Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 8: The decline in casualties inflicted by militancy-related incidents is a welcoming trend for Jammu and Kashmir but State has recorded a disconcerting rise in number of murders, with an average of one murder recorded in two days. According to the latest data provided by National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), State recorded an increase in number of murders but the number of civilians and security forces killed in terrorist related activities showed a downward trend. Moreover, the number of persons convicted for murders and cases charge sheeted showed a declining trend. The data of NCRB data revealed that a total of 124 murders were recorded in year 2012 but for the same year militancy consumed 49 lives including 11 civilians and 38 security forces. Moreover for the year 2013, the number of murders increased to 150 cases but the concerted efforts of security forces further succeed to curb the militancy and casualities showed a little increase and stood at 68 including 15 civilians and 53 security personnel. For the year 2014, a total of 156 murders were recorded and militancy related violence showed a little upward trend with 75 casualities including 28 civilians killing and 47 security forces. Moreover, the neighbouring State Himachal Pradesh recorded 113 cases in 2012, showing a decline trend and cases stood at 104 in 2013 and in the year 2014 with a slight increase the murder cases reached 130 mark. Though murders rate showed a disturbing trend but the conviction rate, cases charge sheeted and persons convicted raises finger over the working of police force. Against the 124 murder cases reported, the 116 cases were charge sheeted but conviction of persons was only 78. Moreover, for the year 2013, against the 150 cases of murders reported, the cases chargesheeted number was 105 cases while persons convicted were only 65 showing a decline. For the year 2014, the number of murders showed increase with 156 murders but only 98 cases were charge sheeted while only 47 persons were convicted. |
