Police, CRPF kill two militants at Sempora-Pampore, four others also injured | | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Dec 8: Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel killed two militants in a brief encounter at Sempora near the Saffron rich town of Pampore on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway here this evening. Two CRPF personnel and two civilians were also injured in the firing incident. Reports said that the brief encounter broke out at 5:30 PM and lasted hardly for 15 minutes. The encounter culminated with the death of the two militants while as the two CRPF personnel and two civilians including a woman tourist sustained minor injuries in the firing incident. Following the firing incident the traffic was stopped on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway. Police and security forces cordoned off the area and carried out cordon and search operation. The cordon and search operation was going on when last reports came in. The whole area has been sealed off and reinforcements have been sent to the area. Police officials said that the firing took place after police and CRPF personnel asked the driver of a Tata Mobile bearing registration number JK22-5943 to stop. The driver did not stop the vehicle and instead the two militants who were boarding the vehicle fired upon the police and CRPF personnel, said the police officials. "The two militants who were inside the vehicle fired upon the police and CRPF personnel. The fire was returned and in the brief exchange of fire the two militants were killed. The vehicle was coming from the Pampore area and headed towards the Srinagar city. Two CRPF jawans and two civilians' also sustained minor injuries in the incident," said the police officials. Police officials said that one of the slain militants has been identified as Shakir Showkat Bhat son of Showkat Ahmad Bhat resident of Nowpora, Sopore. They said the other militant is a foreign national. The CRPF personnel injured in the attack have been identified as Parvinder Kumar and Mohammad Iqbal Lone. The civilians injured have been identified as Ayesha wife of Sheikh Shamim resident of Bihar and Reyaz Ahmad Dar resident of Ratnipora, Pulwama. The attack took place in the Sempora area near the office building of Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI). Sempora is the first area of Pulwama district once one leaves the Srinagar district. The area is strategically located and CRPF personnel can be seen manning the area in order to ensure that no untoward incident takes place on the highway. It has been learnt that police and CRPF had erected a naka in the area some days back following inputs that militants might try to enter Srinagar from South Kashmir. Police officials claimed that the two militants killed today were involved in Monday's attack on CRPF convoy at Sangam near Bijbehara. The police officials said that the slain militants had plans to carry out a fidayeen attack in Srinagar once they entered the summer capital of the state. It would be in place to mention here that six persons including three CRPF personnel got injured in a grenade attack at Kadlabal area in Pampore area on November 20 in the morning. The Kadlabal area is located just a kilometer from today's site of encounter. |
