Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Dec 12: Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed may have dropped enough hints that his daughter and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti would be next Chief Minister of state, but truth of matter is that PDP President is not ready as yet to take over this responsibility.
Taking part in a programme organized by a leading news channel at New Delhi, Mehbooba out-rightly rejected the contention of many people that she would don the mantle of Jammu & Kashmir's next Chief Minister. She said that the state needs a matured person like Mufti to come out of 'trouble'.
"Let me make it clear that we have not formed government with Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) so that I would become chief minister of the state. The government has been formed so that people heave a sigh of relief with respect to the overall governance. Mufti Sahib is the best person to lead and I don't figure anywhere in the picture," said Mehbooba.
The PDP President said that she is nowhere in race for the position of Chief Ministership in Jammu & Kashmir adding that time is not ripe for the same. She said that people should give more time to the coalition government of PDP-BJP in the state and wait for the results as they come slowly but steadily. It would be in place to mention here that Mufti while addressing a press conference at Jammu last month had said that Mehbooba is 'mature' enough to be the next Chief Minister of state. He had also said that his daughter is in constant touch with the people at ground level and as such deserves to be the chief minister of Jammu & Kashmir. Following this press conference speculations were rife that Mehbooba Mufti would be the next chief minister of Jammu & Kashmir and the swearing in ceremony would be held anytime early next year. However, the announcement of PDP President has put an end to the reports that there would be a change of guard in the state and that too very soon. The decision of Mehbooba of not becoming the chief minister for the time being is all set to be a 'boon' to the party which she heads. It was speculated that PDP would 'disintegrate' if Mehbooba becomes the next chief minister of Jammu & Kashmir. Many of the people were of the opinion that PDP founder members like Muzaffar Hussain Beigh and Tariq Hameed Karra would sever their relationship with PDP once PDP President becomes the chief minister of the state.
Given the fact that budget session of the legislature would start from January 18 2016, the state government would get down to the job of 'businesses allied with the budget session. As such the transfer of power as was being speculated would not be a reality at least in the near future. At the same time the BJP is comfortable with Mufti being the CM and the comfort level may not be the same if Mehbooba becomes the chief minister of state.
