Kashmiri girls face online fury for posing with President Mukherjee
12/12/2015 11:48:20 PM
ET Report

srinagar, Dec 12: Getting a chance to pose for a picture with the President of India has always been historic opportunity which anyone feels proud of. But for Kashmiri girls, who recently visited Rashtrapati Bhawan, their group photograph with President Pranab Mukherjee has invited abusive online campaign.
Since the day these girls started their all India tour hosted by the Army under its 'Operation Sadhbhawna' and their pictures of the tour were released, they are facing abuses online.
From Facebook to Twitter, the miscreants have been showering choicest abuses on the group of 30 girls. While some have been pointing fingers on their character, the others have termed the trip as grooming of "Army informers."
From "whore" to "slut", every nasty term is being used against them on the online posts where their photo with the President is also being shared. Some of the miscreants want that the girls be punished while others say they deserve "social boycott."
This is the hate campaign against the girls, who till last week were being hailed as "proud ambassadors of Kashmir by the Army. On December 9, an Army spokesman said, "Proud ambassadors of Kashmir, the 30 girls who are on a tour organized by Army are winning hearts in Delhi."
"These girls visited the Rashtrapati Bhawan, the magnificence and grandeur of which found an equal match in the girls' lofty optimism and infectious vigor and energy. They are indeed living the dreams of thousands of children like them, and getting to meet the President Pranab Mukherjee, who extended his warm greetings and blessing to the children," an Army statement said, adding, "This will undoubtedly remain etched in their memories for eternity because after all, not every but many can boast of having met the President and that too, in the Rashtrapati Bhawan."
Snober Khan, a participant student, also presented a memento to Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces on behalf of Chinar Corps, the statement said.
Earlier, the young girls had the unique opportunity of having a conducted tour of the Parliament where they even attended the Lok Sabha session for some time.
Though the Government glorifies their tour, no measure has been taken to bring an end to the hate campaign. Amid absence of any effort from the Government or the civil society, some prominent faces from Kashmir have been individually trying to support the female folk. Popular radio voice and producer at 92.7 Big FM, RJ Nasir supported them on the Facebook wall. "I should hang my head in shame on how our own sisters are being trolled, abused and tarnished on social media for meeting the Honorable President and how the Government is silent and civil society is downplaying it," Nasir posted.
He said, "Where have they gone and with whom that's a different matter altogether but who gives a right to those Facebook pages to make their images public where people, so called educated people with peanut brains slander them left right and centre. Is this how we want our sisters our daughters to be treated by our very own people."
A police official said they were not aware of the development. "Nobody has informed us about this," he said, adding "Unless a complaint is formally received we cannot act."
Another official said the social media has become "too large" to be tamed unless Government prescribes some policy of dealing with the hate mongers online. "Social media has become a hub of abuses."
