Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 14: The number of militancy related deaths is much lower than the deaths caused in road accidents.
The number of road accidents and the persons killed in them has alarmingly risen over the last few years as since 2013 till July 2015 as many as 2488 persons have lost their lives vis-a-vis 21,335 persons received grievous or minor injuries in 15,442 road mishaps during this period which is indicative of the fact that the roads in the state are quite unsafe.
As of July 2015, as many as 506 people got killed in 3212 road accidents and 992 people lost their lives in 5861 road accidents in 2014 while 990 people were caught in the death trap in 6469 road accidents in the year 2013 occurred in different parts of the state.
The state government's figures suggest that on an average thousand people get killed in different road accidents annually with Jammu region's five districts including Kathua, Samba, Jammu, Udhampur and Ramban, which are located along the National Highway, have experienced maximum number of road accidents.
With around 200 deaths on an average in a year, the Jammu district is on top of the list of unnatural deaths occurring due to road accidents.
On the contrary, the roads in Kashmir and Ladakh regions are safer in comparison to Jammu region; however, even that dubious distinction for these two provinces doesn't leave the roads to be free from any incident.
Ladakh witnessed 44 road accident deaths in 2013 while the figure increased a little higher as the death toll in 2014 stood at 49 and in the first six months of the current year as many as 18 people lost lives on roads of the region.
For the similar period, the roads in Kashmir region witnessed 59 deaths while in the year 2014 the numbers of road accident deaths come down a bit as only 58 people got killed in mishaps.
