Protests spark over 'disbanding' of VDCs in Rajouri | | | Early Times Report Rajouri, Dec 28: Protests sparked over the alleged "disbanding" of Village Defence Committee members in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir today. Shouting slogans, hundreds of members of minority community this afternoon assembled at village Muradpur in Kalakote area of Rajouri and blocked the Jammu-Poonch National Highway. The protestors were demanding that VDC members shall not be disbanded of their official weapons in view of security reasons. They, however, also alleged that the persons arrested in murder case shall also be set free as they were picked up by the police under political pressure. A ration dealer (VDC member) shot dead an NC leader in Muradpur in Kalakote. A woman and her three-year-old son was also shot dead by a VDC member in Budhal area of Rajouri. However, senior officials from police and administration rushed to the spot and explained to the protestors that the decision of "disbanding" VDCs has to be taken by the government. Meanwhile, the agitators later dispersed and traffic resumed on the highway after around few hours. |
