JAMMU, Dec 28: In an alleged case of police accepting a huge amount of money as bribe to free a drug smuggler, a police officer has become the subject of criticism in Samba district and, if sources are to be believed, a secret inquiry is likely to be initiated against him. Sources said acting on a tip-off, a police officer, posted in Samba district, caught hold of drug smuggler and whisked him away in his official vehicle to a police station, that fell under his jurisdiction, in full public view. Some quantity of heroin was also alleged to have been recovered from him. The officer, however, freed him in the morning without registering any case against him. Sources alleged that a huge amount of money was charged by the officer as bribe to let the drug smuggler go. The heroin, which was allegedly seized from him at the time of his 'arrest', was shown by the officer as something trash, sources said. "While it is the duty of FSL to examine a contraband, in this case, the officer performed FSL's duty too by terming the genuine heroin as some trash material," sources added. Sources said senior police officers had taken the issue seriously and were likely to initiate a secret inquiry against the 'guilty' officer. |
