New Delhi, Dec 28: Abdul Rehman, who was earlier arrested over his alleged link with terrorist organisation Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), was today repatriated at Chakan-da-Bagh crossing on the Line of Control in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir.
"The Indian Army, in a humanitarian gesture, informed Pakistan about his details and after confirmation by Pakistan government Rehman was repatriated," said the Defence PRO.
Abdul Rehman son of Asgar Ali from Barnala Tehsil of Bhimber had inadvertently crossed over to India on December 16.
A joint team of Odisha police and Delhi police special cell apprehended Rehman from Paschimakachha village in Cuttack. The police had sent two special squads to Delhi and Jharkhand to gather more information about the activities of the 37-year-old cleric who was running a Madrasa on the outskirts of Cuttack town.
Three days after his arrest, the district administration shut down the illegal madrasa run by Rehman and handed over all 71 students to their parents.
He reportedly operated three bank accounts in two local branches of two nationalised banks which have overseas branches in London.
A bank officer on condition of anonymity said that huge amounts were credited to one of his accounts twice recently through National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT) and Rehman withdrew the amount in phased manner.
The fact of Rehman being a recruiter for Al Qaeda has, according to the police, been confirmed by another terrorist Mohammad Asif, who was arrested from Sambhal in Uttar Pradesh.
Rehman, a father of three, was also in touch with Mohammad Kafeel, a Bengaluru youth who died while unsuccessfully trying to blow up the Glasgow Airport building in 2007.
The investigation has revealed that the cleric had visited Saudi Arabia and Dubai twice in recent months. He also visited Jammu and Kashmir several times.
Rehman had earlier been warned by the police against making hate speeches following a complaint by the Jharkhand Police as he used to visit the neighbouring state frequently and deliver speeches in its villages.
