Let differences not affect PDP-BJP alliance | | | The ongoing differences between PDP and BJP, that share power in J&K, continue to worry the PDP leadership and the leadership of BJP at the national level. In fact, there are inherent contradictions between the ideologies of two parties and the alliance was forged under 'compulsions and convenience'. In reality, convenience surmounted compulsion because there did not seem any sign of compulsions when the two decided to share power. The possibilities of forging an alliance with PDP brightened for BJP when Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and his daughter Mehbooba Mufti, who heads PDP, rejected an offer of grand alliance mooted by Ghulam Nabi Azad, leader of Congress in the Rajya Sabha. He had suggested that Congress and National Conference, which together have 27 MLAs, would support PDP. Knowing that the BJP-led NDA government had assumed power at the Centre, Mufti felt it convenient to forge an alliance with BJP in order to ensure central government's support to economic development in the state which could have been possible with liberal financial assistance to J&K. The Mufti is aware of the differences between BJP and PDP though he believes that differences do surface between two brothers also. But he should know it that if differences between two brothers are not resolved it could lead to domestic trouble leading to a split between them. The same can be said of the alliance between the two parties that have different political ideologies, but Mufti is trying to sort out the differences though he is being confronted by some PDP ministers. About three weeks ago, the chief minister admitted about the simmering differences between PDP and BJP. He has stated that before vigorously pushing for any headway vis-à-vis external and internal dimensions of the Kashmir issue, his foremost challenging task, for the time being, was to resolve contradictions between the allies. He reiterated that reconciliation was the only solution to tackle all irritants between India and Pak and forge friendly ties. Yes, the PDP patron wants India and Pakistan to promote cordial ties which could be possible if the two sides get engaged in sustained process of dialogue. And he believes that the ongoing differences between the two parties could be resolved through the process of talks. Actually, what survives the alliance is the fear of facing fresh elections. Both PDP and BJP, more particularly BJP, know it well that they would not fare well if the PDP and the BJP have to face mid term election. It is this fear that has forced the two to avoid a split. But there are some issues that deserve attention from the PDP. First of all is the imposition of service tax on pilgrims using helicopters to visit the holy cave shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi. The state may not suffer heavy losses if the tax is abolished but it would send a right message to the people of the state and rest of the country. There are other minor issues because BJP has opted for adopting silence on highly controversial issues including scrapping of Article 370 and grant of citizenship rights to the West Pakistan refugees living in Jammu. It would be better for PDP and BJP to reconstitute the coordination committee that would resolve day to day problems between the alliance partners. More than PDP, BJP may suffer the biggest damage if the alliance breaks and the Assembly is dissolved to be followed by fresh elections. There is no other alternative because the PDP will like to form the government with the support of the Congress but since Congress has only 12 MLAs, PDP may not be able to form the government with the support of Congress. It could rethink on support from grand alliance but PDP is not prepared to join hands with NC. Hence the two partners have to co-exist for the development of the state. |
