Ashwani Sharma Udhampur, Jan 3: In a novel attempt to create awareness on pollution in the holy Devika river, elder sister of the sacred Ganga river, here, activists of an NGO have started a campaign here. As part of the campaign, Madhvi Sharma, a B Tech of student SMVDU, painted walls with slogans which were conceptualised by her and Vision2020. A member of the NGO described the exercise as an urgent call to stop further pollution of the river. The theme of the campaign was to create awareness the rising level of pollution in the river and suggest ways to keep it clean. Madhvi said when they observed that the district administration and political leadership weren't sincere towards the growing threat of pollution in Devika, they decided to take an initiative themselves. She said the wall paintings depicted the dependence of people, religion and culture on the holy river. As per the report of Jammu and Kashmir state pollution control board, the quality of water in Devika has fallen below the prescribed standards. The water, which has grown turbid, is extremely unhygienic for domestic and animal use. The deteriorating quality of the water is because of it mixing with sewage waste from Udhampur. |
