GoI tells JK Govt not to consider disbanding of VDCs | | |
Early Times Report Jammu, Jan 3: The central government has told the state government that it should not consider any move to disband Village Defence committees (VDCs). It has told the state government especially the PDP that it should not succumb to pressure being mounted from some quarters in the valley to put it on communal lines. "There has been consistent move by a section in the valley against the VDC as they have been instrumental in defeating the 'Greater Kashmir' concept of the separatists aided by terrorists. Now after having failed in their desires they are taking cue from unrelated incidents to mount pressure by branding them as against one particular community. We understand their games and will not allow them to succeed. The state government has been asked to be more stern in dealing with such pressure,' said a senior government official, who is privy to the communications. According to the sources the Central government has also asked the PDP to rein in its ministers who have given statements that VDCs should be disbanded. " A PDP minister who is demanding that VDCs should be disbanded comes from the district where there have been selective killings at the height of the terrorism and where the two communities live in harmony. PDP Minister is trying to appease a particular community without caring about the concerns of others. Chief Minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti should rein in such a minister," said a politician. "The killing of three people by VDC members was not an act against a particular community. In fact in one instance the accused and deceased were from the same community so how can it be labelled as against one community. In Kashmir there have been many instances of misguided youth harassing and extorting money on gun point but no one there then raises voice for social boycott of such people. And, why the separatists and the civil society in Kashmir say in one voice that gun has no role in the State and all terrorists should be called as perpetrators of violence. The selective targeting can't be allowed," said the senior BJP leader. |
