Speaker carried on with his 'engagements' | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 7: At a time when condolences had started pouring in from far and wide and 7-day mourning was declared in the State after Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's demise early this morning, J&K Assembly's Speaker Kavinder Gupta was busy doing something 'else' which was inappropriate for that moment and unbecoming for a person of the stature of Speaker. He was reportedly busy in inaugurating a private shop at Gandhi Nagar around noon today. Sources said though this was one of the things in otherwise busy schedule of the Speaker, the latter stunned everyone when he went ahead with inaugurating this shop as by that time the news of Mufti Sayeed's demise had come and even State mourning was declared. Not only did this act shock in the political corridors but also commoners were surprised if that act of cutting the ribbon was so important for him that he could not delay for a day. Sources said while Speaker performed this act of cutting ribbon in an 'unabashed' manner, when the pall of gloom had descended in the alliance Government of which BJP is an ally, his private staff too was seen giggling and smiling on the occasion. It is primarily the job of the private staff to get all other appointments cancelled or postponed under such circumstances but in this case a contrary picture emerged, much to embarrassment of the party, said the sources. The occasion as always , sources said was used for a photo session, something which has become an obsession with the BJP leaders. It was not confirmed whether the Speaker flew in to Srinagar after that as all other colleagues including Ministers and MLAs rushed to Srinagar to pay their tributes to the Chief Minister. However, the irony remains that after just few days when the Assembly session begins, it is the Speaker who will move the condolence resolution on the first day and most likely say a few words in his honour , a customary practice in the obituary references. Now what made him to carry on with the inauguration 'business' today is best known to him or his staff. Instead of convening a condolence meeting in his chamber, he chose to oblige the owners, no matter who they are. But the message that has gone far and wide and the reactions that are circulating in social media are certainly a huge embarrassment for him as also for the party. It happens only in this party…..! |
