SRINAGAR, Jan 7: Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed passed away today in the morning at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. Sayeed was admitted at AIIMS on December 24 last year and for the past 14 days he was battling for his life.
Reports from New Delhi said that the end came early in the morning but it was only at about 7:15 AM that it was officially confirmed by the AIIMS authorities. Most of the members of Mufti Sayeed family were by the side of the Chief Minister at the time of his demise. Mufti Sayeed is survived by his wife Gulshan Ara, one son and three daughters.
The State Government ordered for a holiday in all the Government offices for today and a State mourning for seven days. During this period the flag would fly at half mast atop all the Government buildings in the State.
Mufti Sayeed who would have turned 80 years on January 12 achieved great achievements during his political career spanning for almost six decades. He had the distinction of being the first Muslim Home Minister of the country when he took over this position in December 1989.
Mufti Sayeed twice became the Chief Minister of the State and he entered into alliance with Congress and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) while being the Chief Minister of the State between 2002 and 2005 and from March 2015 to date.
The Chief Minister was shifted to AIIMS after he complained of uneasiness where he was kept at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The reports that emanated from AIIMS said that Mufti Sayeed was put on ventilator couple of days back after his situation turned critical. On Tuesday evening the Chief Minister slipped into coma and since then his situation remained critical and the ultimate end came this morning. He died due to multiple organ failure and decrease in platelet count and Sepsis.
From AIIMS the body of Chief Minister was taken to the Palam Technical Airport where Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh paid their last respects to Mufti Sayeed. From Palam Technical Airport the body of Chief Minister was taken to Srinagar where it landed at the Srinagar airport at about 2 PM. From there the body was taken to his official residence at Gupkar road.
At his official residence scores of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) workers had converged to catch a glimpse of their leader and Chief Minister of the State. After ablution the body of Mufti Sayeed was taken to the Sher-I-Kashmir Cricket Stadium where the Nimaz-i-Jinazah (funeral prayers) was offered.
Then the body was taken to Chief Minister's ancestral village of Bijbehara in South Kashmir. At Bijbehara the locals along with some PDP leaders took part in the funeral prayers. In the evening Mufti Sayeed was laid to rest at the graveyard located adjacent to the Padshah Bagh also known as Dara Shikoh park.
Born on January 12, 1936 at Baba Mohalla in Bijbehara town of South Kashmir's Anantnag district, Mufti Sayeed got his school education at Bijbehara. He graduated from Sri Pratap (SP) College, Srinagar. Later he went to Aligarh Muslim University where he completed LLB and also did post graduation in Arabic history. He was a practicing lawyer and was associated with Anantnag as an advocate for some years.
Mufti Sayeed started his political career in 1959 when he joined the Democratic National Conference led by Ghulam Mohammad Sadiq. He fought elections in 1962 from Bijbehara Assembly segment and retained the seat five years later. In 1972 he became a junior Minister in the Sadiq led Government in the State.
Following this Mufti Sayeed joined Congress and he became Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief, the post which he held for 10 years. He remained with Congress for many years and was considered to be very close to then Congress stalwart and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He left Congress as soon as the party joined hands with National Conference in the State in 1987 wherein it was decided that NC and Congress would fight the Assembly elections jointly.
After leaving Congress, Mufti Sayeed joined the Jan Morcha led by Vishwanath Pratap (VP) Singh in 1989 and became the Home Minister of the country in December 1989. His elevation as Home Minister was posed with an immediate challenge as his daughter Rubaiya Sayeed was kidnapped by some militants in Srinagar. Rubaiya was set free only when some of the militants of Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) were released in the exchange.
Mufti Sayeed returned to Congress during the tenure of former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao. He became Member of Parliament from Anantnag-Pulwama after winning the Lok Sabha elections in 1998. He resigned from Congress in 1999 and as such had to give up the Lok Sabha seat. In the same year he formed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) along with his daughter Mehbooba Mufti. Mehbooba later on replaced her father on Anantnag-Pulwama Lok Sabha seat.
In 2002 Mufti Sayeed became the Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir after he entered into an alliance with Congress. His party emerged as the single largest party in 2014 Assembly elections by winning 28 seats. In March last year PDP led by Mufti Sayeed joined hands with BJP and the deal was final when he called on Prime Minister. Mufti Sayeed became the Chief Minister and it was decided that he would be the Chief Minister for six years.
