An advisory has also been issued to maintain utmost vigil in the border areas, according to official sources. A top police officer, who wished not to be named, told Early Times that stringent arrangements had been put in place in Kashmir ahead of the Republic Day. "To thwart any untoward incident, police had laid checkpoints on the entry and exit points of Srinagar city and were maintaining a strict vigil on the suspected persons. I can say that all the security agencies are cooperating with each other to ensure incident-free functions on January 26," he said. He said police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel had been deployed all over the city including in Lal Chowk, Budshah Chowk, Civil Secretariat and Old Secretariat. "We are taking all the necessary measures required for the safe conduct of January 26 functions. Meanwhile, police were also seen carrying out surprise check of the vehicles on the entry and exit points in this capital city. The cops were also seen frisking motorcyclists and passengers of vehicles in Srinagar city," witnesses said. He said that similar arrangements had been put in place in the other Valley districts too. "Police and paramilitary forces can be seen carrying out searches of all the passenger and private vehicles on the Baramulla-Srinagar highway. Adequate security personnel have also been deployed inside Baramulla, Sopore and other sensitive areas," he informed. Security grid has also been tightened in Pulwama, Shopian and Islamabad districts of south Kashmir, where troops and police manned the streets and the highway to keep a close watch on the movement of suspicious persons.
