Another son rise in Kashmir politics on cards
Mehbooba, other family members want Tasaduq Mufti to join politics

Srinagar, Jan 18: In the wake of death of former Chief Minister and PDP founder Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, his son Tasaduq Mufti, is likely to join the party.
Highly placed sources told Early Times that PDP President Mehbooba Mufti has been personally trying to convince her younger brother to join politics in the "larger interest of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and the party."
It is being understood that Tasaduq will join PDP only after the party upholds the alliance with the BJP.
Sources said the first major discussion on the issue started within the family after the Chaharum of Mufti on January 10. "On return from Mufti Sahib's mausoleum in Bijbehara, Mehbooba and other family members started telling him (Tasaduq) that it was high time for him to join politics to try fill the vacuum left behind by the death of the party founder," the family sources said.
Tasaduq, a cinematographer by profession, has been staying away from Kashmir and politics. He spent his considerable time in the US and subsequently shifted to Bengalaru. But since Mufti fell ill on December 24 last year, the son rushed back to be with the family.
Sources said even though Mufti never asked his children other than Mehbooba to join politics, after his death the family needs to go for a change in the strategy. "For Mehbooba Ji her father was the main support to run the politics. With his death, she needs someone from within the family to be by her side in the PDP to run the party affairs more strongly and efficiently than before," the family insiders said.
Sources said Mufti's wife Jawahara Begum, has also started asking son to "assist" his sister in the party affairs. "Basically the last nine months of governance exposed many faces within the PDP. Most of those whom Mufti Sahab trusted for the alliance proved the black-sheep, so it's a must for Mehbooba to have support of her brother," said some party leaders.
As of now Mehbooba wants to rely more on the old guards and political stalwarts like Tariq Hameed Karra and Muzaffar Hussain Beg. "But to mobilize her grassroots and to clear misconceptions which have emerged since last year, Mehbooba Ji badly needs her brother in the PDP," the sources said.
Tasaduq has started showing signs of inclination towards politics. On January 17, on the instructions of his sister, he attended the crucial meeting of PDP leaders held at their Fairview residence to decide the future of government formation with the BJP.
Even though Tasaduq didn't speak a word at the meeting, his presence was of significance. "It was the first feeler to the party, that the family scion will join the party founded by his father," said an insider.
Otherwise, till now, Tasaduq, as per sources, has never attended any of the party meetings.
Like Mufti, his son is seen as a patient listener, a quality which the party looks ahead for in the leadership.
