5-hr meeting and virtually no decision | Internal factor in PDP | | Early Times Report jammu, Jan 18: Everyone in J&K and New Delhi had expected that the core group of the PDP would take decision this way or that way on the government formation on January 17, but it didn't happen. The PDP left everyone guessing. And, this, notwithstanding the fact that the members of the core group met for five long hours under the chairmanship of party president Mehbooba Mufti and discussed threadbare the prevailing political situation in the state, as also reviewed the progress on the agenda of alliance on the basis of which the PDP and the BJP had formed coalition government in the state in March last year. The only decision that the core group took on Sunday was the empowerment of Mehbooba Mufti to take final decision on the government formation. That the meeting went on for five hours spoke for itself. If the sources within the party are to be believed, then it can be said that the opinion was sharply divided over the issue of forging an alliance yet again with the BJP. Sources reveal that "not one but many members of the core group directly and indirectly charged the BJP with flouting the coalition dharma and expressed the view that the alliance with the BJP has hurt the PDP more in the Valley". "The people of Kashmir had voted against the BJP in the assembly elections. They had voted for the PDP hoping that the party would push forward its self-rule agenda, but nothing of this sort happened during the ten months when late Mufti Sayeed was at the helm. The PDP should not have entered into alliance with the BJP considering its stands on Article 370, Article 35-A, Armed Forces Special Powers Act, land under the Army, State Flag and Cow-killing and beef eating laws," a credible source in the PDP said. It added that "there are many in the PDP who still hold the same view and want the PDP president to enter into an alliance with the Congress, the PDP's natural ally". "At the same time, however, the critics of the BJP in the PDP do not want to stretch the issue too far and that's the reason they left everything to the judgment of the PDP president". The fact of the matter is that it was the internal factor within the PDP that played a crucial role in the meeting of the core committee. Mehbooba Mufti's concluding remarks that she would take her own time and was not in a hurry to form the government in the state need to be viewed in this context. It is clear that she wants to iron out the differences within the party before taking over as Chief Minister. The statement of PDP spokesperson Naeem Akhtar that "She (Mehbooba) will take her own call and own time", that "there is no time line" and that "the focus is on agenda (Agenda of Alliance) which has been Mufti Sahib's vision and we want to implement that vision and Mehbooba Mufti will take call how best to do it" also needs to be viewed in the same context. It suggests that Mehbooba Mufti wants a categorical commitment from the BJP in general and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in particular that the PDP would be allowed a freehand in implementing the agenda of alliance in its letter and spirit. She needs such a commitment in order to conciliate PDP leaders like Tariq Hameed Karra, who are bitterly opposed to the BJP and the RSS. "I have no doubt on decision of Mufti Sahib. But I have to assess and see whether in the changed circumstances, I can get his vision implemented. I will take my time and take my call appropriately," Mehbooba Mufti said in the meeting only to allay the fears of the critics of the BJP like Karra. |
