Jammu, Jan 18: Despite commitment of the union and state governments to work for the upliftment of scheduled caste and scheduled tribe community, it is pity that students belonging to these communities are deprived of scholarships admissible to them for last two years. Source in department informed that owing to insensitive approach of Social Welfare Department (SWD), the department has failed to take up matter with Union government, and funds worth Rs 21Crores rupees for paying scholarships to the students of weaker sections are still not released by the government. "The students of SC, ST community are running pillar to post to get their scholarships", said source wishing not be mentioned. "However, as per the guidelines, the scholarship fee should be released before the end of session, so that, the students will bear everyday expenses but after lapse of two years the department has still failed to release scholarships in favour of students who are enrolled in different educational institutions", said another employee, posted in SWD, Jammu. Sushil Kumar who is presently enrolled in Central University of Jammu informed that in session 2013-14, he had done B.Ed course and then he had made repeated visits to the department concerned to release scholarships but nothing has been done by the department so far. He further said that due to shortage of money, his friends could not enroll in post graduation courses which were offered by Central University of Jammu, and University of Jammu in 2014-15 session, despite their inclusion in merit list. Another student, Mohammed Talib who belongs to ST community said that department has been giving same reply that due to wrong information of account numbers of the beneficiaries, the scholarship have not been transferring in their accounts, but reality is that the department so far has failed to take up matter with union government. When contacted, Director Social welfare Department, Virjee Hangloo said that due to pendency of over Rs 21 Crores by the union government, we are unable to release scholarships of SC, ST students in time, as soon the union government releases funds, the students will get scholarship. |
