BJP, PDP lock horns over Agenda of Alliance | 'Power projects can't be returned in haste; Let Mehbooba take oath first' | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Jan 18: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seem to be getting ready for yet another face off as PDP wants its coalition ally to clear its stand on "Agenda of Alliance," while BJP has made it clear that "Agenda of Alliance" cannot be implemented in haste. Sources told Early Times that BJP leaders have got it conveyed to PDP the power projects owned by National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) in Jammu and Kashmir cannot be returned in a "jiffy" and even if these are given back to JK a proper procedure would be followed. Insiders revealed that BJP central leadership has asked the PDP President Mehbooba Mufti to go ahead and take oath as the 13th Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and "stop putting conditions." The PDP President, according to the sources, has been assured by the BJP top leaders that "everything would be done" and she should "stop worrying". "When Agenda of Alliance was signed both the parties agreed upon the fact that it would be implemented during the course of six years. PDP is not right when it says that the Agenda of Alliance with BJP was not fulfilled. Ten months is a very small period to judge whether something has been implemented or not," a senior BJP leader told this newspaper. PDP, according to the sources, has expressed dismay over the way and style of functioning of the BJP ministers in Jammu and Kashmir. "BJP top leadership will have to ensure that BJP ministers don't act like local MLAs and pay attention towards the development of all the three regions of the state," PDP is understood to have got it conveyed to the BJP top brass. Sources said that BJP leaders have told the PDP that they are keen to continue their alliance with the PDP and every possible attempt would be made to implement the "Agenda of Alliance" in the letter and spirit. Insiders claimed that the PDP President is insisting that if BJP really wants to carry forward the alliance it should stop "lip service" and act. A PDP leader wishing not to be named while talking to Early Times said, "We have authorized our President to take the final call on government formation. She is also keen to take over from where her father left but BJP has to prove its sincerity first." A senior BJP leader said that both the parties had constituted a Coordination Committee when the government was formed but PDP during the past 10 months didn't show any interest in attending the CC meetings. "Had the CC meetings been held regularly we could have discussed the implementation of the Agenda of Alliance. Among the senior PDP leaders only Mehbooba Mufti attended a few meetings which were held the senior PDP leaders Tariq Hameed Kara and Muzzafar Hussain Beigh showed no interest in the CC meetings," the leader said. He said, "It's unfair on the part of PDP to blame BJP for everything. The Coordination Committee failed as PDP leaders stayed away from it." |
