Farooq, Omar 'differ' on aligning with BJP to form Govt | | | Delay in the government formation has triggered 'differences' be tween NC president Farooq Abdullah and his son Omar Abdullah. Whether it was part of a political prank that Farooq played by voicing his readiness to form government in alliance with BJP if the proposal came from the latter or was he being serious about the tie-up to ensure that his political enemy PDP was out of power. But Omar rubbished the idea saying that he was opposed to any tie-up with BJP because of wide ideological differences with it. Was Farooq Abdullah, by voicing support for sharing power with the BJP, trying to motivate Mehbooba to end the suspense over the government formation? It seems so because Omar would have not confronted his father by ruling out the possibility of forging any alliance with BJP. But within hours, Farooq changed his mind and said NC would not forge an alliance with BJP. Instead, he demanded dissolution of the Assembly followed by fresh election. While Farooq said he was open to discuss a tie-up with BJP for government formation in Jammu and Kashmir, his son ruled out the possibility of an alliance with the saffron outfit, saying the party "is not power hungry" and would not make an "ideological compromise". "NC is not power hungry and is not interested in political power that comes through an ideological compromise. And it was because of this stand that we had shunned prospects of an alliance with BJP a year ago and the reasons for having done that remain unchanged," Omar stated. He explained that Dr Abdullah was responding to a hypothetical question based on a hypothetical situation and he never said that the party would support BJP. Farooq, according to Omar, had said that if any such request or proposal was received from BJP, it would be taken up by the party's working committee. However, the BJP has made no such proposal because it was simply waiting for the response of PDP, with which it had shared power for about 10 months. In this connection, Omar explained that no such proposal had been received, which makes Farooq's remarks a pure reiteration of the organizational procedure to deal with such issues and nothing more. The former chief minister said PDP was an ally of BJP, and NC was not obliged to rescue either PDP or BJP from the ensuing stalemate in their standing political alliance. Well, the real reason behind the different stance Farooq and Omar had taken on the possibility of BJP seeking support from NC to end the long political stalemate. But like her father, Mehbooba may not ditch BJP because her father had forged the alliance not only for securing liberal financial assistance from the central government but also to promote regional balance. He knew it better than any other politician that regional discrimination had been the main cause for mistrust between Kashmir and Jammu regions. Mehbooba has been authorized to decide about the date of forming the government. This was done during a meeting of senior PDP functionaries Sunday. |
