Panel to redress grievances of left out flood victims formed: Govt to HC

Srinagar, Jan 27: The government on Wednesday submitted a compliance report before J&K High Court, stating therein that it has constituted district level committee to address the grievance of flood victims of 2014 who were left out from the purview of compensation till date.
"When hearing was taken up, the court was informed that panel headed by concerned Deputy Commissioner, the committees have been asked to deal with the grievances in a time bound manner," Principal Secretary, Relief and Rehabilitation Department, Sandeep Kumar Nayak stated while submitting compliance to the directions by the High Court.
"The Committee shall also submit report to the Relief and Rehabilitation Department regarding the disposal of the complaints on a monthly basis," Nayak submitted.
"Concerned Assistant Commissioner, Revenue will be the member of the panel while the concerned Tehsildar will be its member secretary, he added.
Earlier on December 14 of concluding year, the High Court had directed the government to devise a mechanism to redress the grievance of left out victims within ten days. The court had also directed the government to take a decision on the complaints within 15 days from the date it is received by it.
Meantime Principal Secretary Relief and Rehabilitation Department, Sandeep Kumar Nayak submitted that the Government also felt it, necessary and expedient to constitute a committee at the district level who may receive the complaints from the people affected by the floods of September 2014 and look into such complaints and recommend the remedial measures within a period of 15 days from the date, such complaints are received by the Committee.
He added the Committee shall be responsible to look into the complaints and take remedial measures in a time bound manner.
The High Court has passed the direction after it was informed that many people whose properties suffered damage in the century's worst floods have not been compensated by the government thus far.
Nearly 2.5 lakh structures were damaged in the devastating floods in September 2014 and out of them 199,964 were residential houses.
