BJP 'loses' 35 LS seats in 20 months | Mood of the nation | | Early times Report JAMMU, Jan 27: The latest survey conducted by ABP News and Nielsen to assess the mood of the nation should not be very inspiring for the BJP-led NDA. The survey was conducted in the second week of January and the results were broadcasted only last night. According to the survey, which was conducted nation-wide, the BJP-led NDA is far ahead of the Congress-led UPA, but its popularity has dwindled considerably in the past 20 months. If general elections are held today, the BJP+ would win 301 seats in the 543-member House. In May 2014, the BJP-led formation had won 336 seats. The BJP had won 282 seats and its allies 54. In other words, the BJP would lose as many as 35 seats in case the general elections are held today. It's a huge loss considering the fact that the BJP-led NDA Government summed office only less than 20 months ago with much fanfare. If this trend continues during the remaining 40 months and the indications from across the nation suggest that this trend is likely to be continued, the BJP+ may not win even 200 seats. In 2015, the BJP didn't taste any electoral victory; it lost the elections in all the States it was in fray. It lost the Assembly elections miserably in Delhi and Bihar. It also lost by-elections in Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand. Besides, it also lost its face in all the States wherein it contested the panchayat and local-bodies' elections. It happened in UP, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The BJP also started with a defeat in the Zila Parishad elections, held in Himachal Pradesh in this very month. It is a different story that the BJP spokespersons have been claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the country for at least two more decades. It is expected of all the political parties. After all, the leadership of these respective parties has to keep the morale of the party workers high. If the survey showed that the BJP's popularity dwindled during the past 20 months, it also showed the Congress-led UPA and the Left parties recovering some of the lost political space. The Congress-led UPA would improve its tally by about 50 seats if elections are held today and the Left parties would also improve their strength by 10 seats. If the BJP-led NDA has to win the 2019 general elections, it will have to reform itself and devise and implement people-centric policies, adopt rational and national foreign and military policies and stop hobnobbing with such outfits as Peoples Conference or such outfits which demand semi-independence for Jammu and Kashmir. |
