BJP unlikely to accept any fresh demand of PDP | Shah likely to meet Mehbooba to discuss Govt formation | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 27: After clipping wing of pro-PDP leader Ram Madhav, the BJP highcommand BJP seems unwilling to expand the ambit of the agenda of alliance with the Mehbooba Mufti-led PDP in Jammu and Kashmir and will not cede any more ground than what was agreed upon before forming a government under Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, whose death last month led to a political uncertainty in the state. Credible sources in the BJP said that instead of discussing new conditions of PDP leaders, the BJP's central leadership is seriously thinking to set its own conditions because party leadership has realized that accepting PDP's conditions is not in the interest of the party so it is better to impose own conditions. BJP has taken the decision to impose fresh conditions only after sidelining National General Secretary of the party, Ram Madhav, who is known for his soft approach towards PDP. Peoples Democratic Party has conveyed to the BJP that it wants the Centre to agree to lift the controversial AFSPA from at least two districts of the state and deliver its commitment to vacate buildings occupied by security forces before Mehbooba Mufti takes oath as the Chief Minister. Credible sources said that BJP leadership has out-rightly rejected this demand because party feels that revoking AFSPA would open a new Pandora Box. "There are issues (such as Armed Forces Special Powers Act) on which we have historically held different views. After a detailed discussion, we reached a common ground in the agenda of alliance. Now, it would be difficult to broaden the scope of the alliance... Like her, we also have certain constituencies to address," a BJP leader in New Delhi told a news agency. He went on to point that the BJP was not putting any pressure on Mehbooba Mufti but party won't buckle under pressure either. A meeting between Mehbooba and BJP chief Amit Shah is also expected once there is a broad agreement on the terms of forming the government. The BJP does not expect Mehbooba to pull out of the alliance that was stitched together by her father in the immediate future. |
