DSEK tightens noose around trade unions | | | Early times Report SRINAGAR, Jan 27: The Director School Education Kashmir Dr Shah Faesal, who topped IAS exams, has tightened noose over the trade unions in the Education department in Kashmir and has made life difficult for them. The measures taken by Dr Faesal have put the trade union leader Abdul Qayoom Wani, who heads Jammu and Kashmir Teachers Forum (JKTF) and Employees Joint Action Committee, in a tight spot. Dr Faesal has a simple logic that trade unionism is fine but that doesn't mean that leaders can stay away from work. The DSEK wants them (leaders) to teach first and then indulge in unionism. In the recent past Wani has taken "bull by the horns" and has blamed Dr Shah Faesal for "ruining the Education department." In his speeches he has demanded that senior people should be given the charge of the important Education department and new comers like Dr Shah Faesal should learn from them. The JKTF president calling the DSEK "chocolate boy" during a meeting of the Forum and that video going viral too has made things difficult for Qayoom Wani and the company. The JKTF has called upon the teachers to hit the streets on January 30 to protest against what it has called the "dictatorial policies" of the DSEK. However, many factions of the JKTF have opposed the call given by Abdul Qayoom Wani and have asked the teachers to stay away from any such protests. A group of teachers while talking to Early Times said, "The protest call for Jan 30 given by Qayoom Wani is nothing more than a call of ego and arrogance. We don't support such calls." An official of the Education Department said, "The DSEK enjoys political patronage and he has taken Qayoom Wani and his associates head on at the behest of his political masters." The official said the face-off between Wani and the DSEK is hitting the Education sector in Kashmir. "Political interference in the Education department can play havoc with the career of the students," he added. Another official said that despite the much hyped "Reformative reforms" of the DSEK there has been not much improvement in the performance of the Government schools in class Xth and XIIth results. "We are not opposing the idea about teachers should be asked to perform their duties but to take entire department hostage for a handful of people could prove counter-productive," he added. One can easily make out that Qayoom Wani and company this time around are on a "weak wicket" as the people whom they claim to represent have distanced themselves from Wani's protest call for January 30. Now it remains to be seen how many people would come out on streets in Kashmir on Saturday. |
