Protests against NFSA implementation continue in Valley | | | Javaid Naikoo Early Times Report Srinagar, Feb 17: Protests continued for the second consecutive day in parts of Kashmir as people demand implementation of NFSA with additional subsidized quota of rice on monthly basis. reports of protests have been received from Ganderbal, Kupwara besides Srinagar. People from different parts of old Srinagar city blocking roadsprotested in Naqashband Sahab area and demanded that authorities should either completely roll back NFSA implementation in Kashmir or come up with modification in the act like additional quota of rice on subsidized rates in addition to 5 Kgs of rice to per person as per NFSA guidelines to meet monthly requirement of rice of every individual of a family. The protestors raising slogans like "Ye Zulm Band Karo-NFSA Band Karo and "Gunda-Gardi Nahi Chalegi" blocked roads leading to city centre Lal chowk and said that NFSA is not a suitable act to be implemented in Kashmir where every individual eats rice twice a day and consumes more rice compared to people of other states of country. "Authorities impose an act which has loopholes. We have no issues with NFSA implementation which ensures 5 kgs of rice to every individual of a family for one month, but the problem is that this 5 kgs of rice does not fulfil the needs. Let government give us additional quota of rice monthly on subsidized rates besides 5 kgs as per NFSA guidelines,we have no issues with this act," Muhmmad Abdullah one Protestor Said "Government claims they will give rice 5 kgs @ 3 rupees and flour @ 2 rupees per kg, they don't consider rice requirement of an individual for one month which is more than 5 kgs for one individual, what we will do of flour when we are not used to eat bread instead of rice during day or at dinner time, where from we will get additional quota of rice."Protestor Parvaiz Mir told early times NFSA Is a law of the parliament of India which aims to provide food grains to approximately two thirds of country's 1.2 billion people. Under the provisions of law, 75% of rural population and 50% of the urban population under Public Distribution System are entitled to 5 kilograms per person per month of rice, cereals and grains at rice Rupees 3per kg, wheat at Rupees 2 per kg and Coarse grains at Rupees1 per kg. The guidelines of law reveal that states are responsible for determining eligibility criteria and people like Pregnant women and lactating mothers are entitled to a nutritious "take home ration" of 600 Calories and a maternity benefit of at least Rs 6,000 for six months, while Children 6 months to 14 years of age are to receive free hot meals. |
