Samba, Feb 17: The indiscriminate establishing of industrial sector in Samba is good as far as generating employment for the unemployed youth but the rapid expansion of the industries especially related to pesticides is also causing a severe damage to the environment.
This industrial area consists of two phases, Phase I and II having almost 250 factories of different industries mostly dealing with the hazardous chemicals and the discharge of waste material from these factories is flowing into Basantar and that too without any check.
"These industries especially pesticide units are polluting the air and water of the area, sources said and added that the river Basantar is on the verge of death just because of constant flow of toxic waste materials coming from the industries."
The villagers living in small hamlets situated along the downstream of the river where the water of this river is being used traditionally for agricultural and domestic purposes are facing health problems.
Pertinently Youth congress workers also had held a strong protest demonstration against Pollution Control Board Samba some days ago to register their protest over the pollution of surroundings especially the Basanter river which was once the life line of Samba town.
Vinod Kumar, Distt President Youth Congress said that Pesticide unit in Phase 1 and Phase II do not follow the prescribed the norms of PCB and thus the water bodies are being polluted but the PCB official are acting like mute spectator. "The industries entrepreneurs continue flout norms and that too without any fear of Pollution Control Board authorities, he added.
"Although some industrial units have set up a Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) but these are only a show piece as they don't function properly, said Harsh Sharma, a local resident of Samba.
"These ETPs are mere eye wash to the people of Samba and authorities, Harsh Sharma said while adding, "industrial entrepreneurs particularly manufacturing pesticide are reportedly polluting the air and water of the area."
