Guv orders release of funds for flood-hit traders | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report Srinagar, Feb 17: Governor Narendra Nath Vohra has issued directions to the administration to immediately release Rs. 120 crores as rehabilitation for the businessmen who suffered losses due to the September 2014 devastating deluge. The Governor issued these directions during the meeting with the representatives of Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA). The KEA delegation was led by its Chairman Mohammad Yasin Khan. "Taking cognizance of these circumstances the Governor during the meeting assured that payment of Rs 120 crores for flood victims out of the Chief Minister's relief fund which was earlier partially released will be paid in full and the process to that effect will start in two days," said KEA chief spokesman, Siraj Ahmad. The KEA chief spokesman said that Governor was informed that the flood drastically devastated the business property and infrastructure in the valley. He said that Rs. 800 crores as interest subvention against 40, 000 crores loss suffered by the business community is a crude joke. "The Governor was informed that those flood victims having no borrowings from bank and who are mainly small traders have been left high and dry. The Governor was requested to take up the matter of enhancing the flood compensation with the package already announced by the central government is insufficient," said Siraj. The KEA chief spokesman said that Governor was informed about the pending payment of contactors in respect of their jobs which stand completed. He said the Governor passed on directions for release of the pending payments by the end of March this year. "The attention of the Governor was drawn towards the ailing tourism sector and he was informed that the infrastructure in respect of roads, street lighting, cleanliness, electricity and face-lifting of tourist destinations need to be taken up immediately. He was informed that the revised master plan is much overdue but unfortunately has been entrusted to only one person who is the chief town planner," said Siraj. The KEA chief spokesman said that the Governor was requested to engage and hire a team of experts who would take overall view and finalize the master plan keeping ample provisions for commercial activities, and specifically designated areas like hotels', recreation, parks and parking facilities taking into account the growing demands of increasing population. "The Governor was informed that the T&D losses claimed by Power Development Department (PDD) being highest by all standards need to be arrested. In this backdrop he was suggested to refine and streamline the existing infrastructure and provide free electricity to the people below poverty line on the same pattern as adopted by the government at Delhi with respect to both water and electricity," said Siraj. |
