Govt considering to give more rations under Food Security Act | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Feb 17: In the aftermath of widespread protests, Jammu and Kashmir government today said it is exploring the possibility of an increase in the scale of ration distributed under National Food Security Act (NFSA). "As far as the scale of ration is concerned, we are thinking over it. We are exploring the possibility of how to increase the scale. We have made a proposal and will submit it soon," Director of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) Abdul Rashid War told reporters here. At present, the rice to be distributed per month under the Act is five kgs per soul. This had led to protests in some areas, including in summer capital Srinagar, with the people demanding an increase in the scale. War said the department is rationalizing the system of public distribution of food grains and people need not to pay heed to misinformation spread by some vested interests. "Some miscreants are spreading misinformation about the Act. They may have some vested interests. But I appeal the people not to pay heed to them," the official said. The department is rationalizing the system and "we will make sure that the people get the ration supply properly. Some people are also saying that certain people will get only 2kgs of wheat and 3 kgs of rice, which is incorrect. It is actually the cost of ration and not the scale of ration." The director said the department is putting in place a robust system of distribution of ration under which there would be no chance of pilferage. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah said the people of the state had categorically rejected NFSA and any law that deprives people of basic ration is "not only unjust but also inhuman". Demanding that the NFSA be put into immediate abeyance in the state, Abdullah said the government should announce the allocation of 35 kgs of ration per household as per the 2011 census figures without any further delay. He said at a time when the people of the state, especially those in the Valley, are still recuperating from the devastation and destruction caused by the 2014 floods, the NFSA has come as a blow of misery and persecution for the people. "Rather than going out of their way to rehabilitate the flood victims, it seems like the governments insensitivity knows no bounds. The Governor should immediately put the act into abeyance," Abdullah said. |
