SRINAGAR, Feb 21: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President, Mehbooba Mufti today said that she is ready to form the next government in the state if it helps in solving the problems of the people of Jammu & Kashmir.
Mehbooba said that her father and former chief minister Late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed went against the tide and decided to join hands with Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) for government formation in the state last year. She credited her father for bringing India and Pakistan close to each other and said that Jammu & Kashmir would be ultimate beneficiary of the friendship between the two neighbouring countries.
The PDP President said that former CM took the decision of forming PDP-BJP coalition government in order to provide relief to the people. She said that she stands by the decision of her father and would not hesitate to don the mantle if it helps in easing the situation and providing relief to common masses.
"When Mufti Sahib formed the government last year many of his friends in PDP told him that the decision would be detrimental. He in clear terms told them that results would be detrimental in the shape that some other party gets more seats than PDP in next assembly elections. He said he has joined hands with BJP for the development of the state and for that he is ready for any sacrifice," said Mehbooba while addressing party workers at a function held here to launch the party membership drive.
The PDP President hailed the performance of her father and said that Mufti always worked for the betterment of people without being 'power hungry'. She said that she would carry forward the 'vision' and 'dream' of her father adding that PDP stands for 'safeguarding' the interests of people of Jammu & Kashmir.
"If you feel that forming the government in the state would lead to the solution of the problems being faced by people then I am ready for it. I am not power hungry and I want to serve the people so that there is an end to their miseries and sufferings. I have inherited this as a legacy from my father and I would like to carry it forward," said Mehbooba.
The PDP President claimed that Mufti was able to change the mindset of politicians of the country towards Pakistan and it was due to this reason that both India and Pakistan are no longer at loggerheads with each other. She said that hostilities should end so that there is atmosphere of peace and tranquility.
"For 10 years former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh yearned to visit Pakistan since that is his birth place, but he could not do so. On the other hand Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Pakistan, had tea there and attended the marriage function of a relative of Pakistan Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharief. This was all possible due to the positive and pro-active role played by Mufti Sahib. He motivated Modi that enmity with Pakistan is not good for India and it is imperative to have good relations with the neighbouring country," said Mehbooba.
Referring to the ongoing encounter between militants and security forces at Pampore in South Kashmir, the PDP President said that such incidents lead to death and destruction. She said that gun is no solution and that all the outstanding issues can be solved by dialogue and reconciliation. She added that bloodshed should come to an end so that peace and prosperity prevails in the Kashmir valley.
"United States of America is an important power in the world but it has failed in Iraq and Afghanistan. The basic reason for its failure in these countries is that there is violence. Same has happened in Syria where there seems to be no end to bloodshed. For peace to prevail across the world it is important that violence and bloodshed should come to an end," said Mehbooba.
The PDP President said that her party has a responsibility to bring an end to bloodshed in the state and added that she would leave no stone unturned in this regard. She said that despite being admitted at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi, Mufti would enquire about the release of funds for flood hit people and construction of flats for Kashmiri Pandits in valley.
PDP General Secretaries Nizam-ud-Din Bhat and Rafi Ahmad Mir, PDP District President Srinagar, Mohammad Khurshid Alam, Legislators, Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari, Muhammad Ashraf Mir, Asiya Naqash, Anjum Fazili and Noor Mohammad, PDP District Coordinator, Abdul Hameed Kohsheen, PDP Youth Wing President, Waheed-ur-Rehman Parra, Muddasir Amin and all zonal presidents of district Srinagar were present on the occasion.
