Srinagar, Feb 21: While the Peoples Democratic Party launched its membership drive from the summer capital on Sunday, senior PDP leader Tariq Hamid Karra who represents Srinagar constituency in the Parliament was again conspicuous for his absence at the SK Park venue here. Karra who has been a staunch critic of PDP alliance with the rightwing BJP yet again stayed away from the public rally hosted by his party. The hardliner, known for his stiff stand, wants the PDP to snap ties with the "party backed by RSS." Though Karra had attended a party meeting after the death of PDP founder and then Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, he had not uttered a word there but only listened to the viewpoint of his party president and other colleagues. Earlier also, on November 7 2015, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the historic Rs 80,000 Crores package for the state from the nearby SK Cricket stadium here, Karra was absent there as well. However, Karra's sister in law Asiya Naqash, who is MLA from Hazratbal constituency was present "all powerful" at the rally and was seen moving around with confidence. Though it is believed that Karra introduced his sister-in-law to PDP and even made her get mandate in the previous government, Asiya has often been acting the opposite of what Karra wants. Last time ahead of Modi's visit to Kashmir, Karra had allegedly told his party loyalists to stay away from the PM's rally. But that time also Asiya was among the frontrunners to greet Modi. However this time PDP leaders said Karra was out of station and thus couldn't make it to the event. "There was no ideological difference this time, he didn't come because he is away and had formally explained his position to the party," a PDP leader told Early Times. Despite repeated attempts Karra or Asiya could not be contacted for comments. |
