Mehbooba asks politicians, media to behave responsibly in JNU episode | | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Feb 21 : Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President, Mehbooba Mufti today said that courts should be allowed to perform their duty and deliver verdict in the cases of 'sedition' involving students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in the union capital. Talking to reporters on the sidelines of party's membership drive here, PDP President said that media and politicians should not deliver verdict in the cases that have hogged attention over the past few days. She said cases of students like Kanhaya Kumar and Umar Khalid should be solved according to the principles of justice and wisdom. "Over the past few days it has been observed that media trials have been conducted in cases of Kanhaya and Umar. This is not good and it needs to be stopped at the earliest. At the same time politicians of the country should also learn a lesson or two and they should behave properly. They should not hold the students guilty while the cases are being heard in the courts," said Mehbooba. The PDP President said that only courts can decide on cases that are very sensitive in nature adding that interference from other quarters would lead to disastrous consequences. She said that political system of the country should not intervene in the working of judicial system since it would have serious consequences for the country as a whole. "I have already asked Haseeb Drabu and Amitabh Mattoo to visit JNU and talk to the students there. They visited the campus on Saturday and assured the students of all help. I have asked them to talk to Home Minister, Rajnath Singh if the need arises. I hope the situation would be normal soon, but still then we are ready to help the students," said PDP President. When asked if she was going to meet Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) leaders in New Delhi over the government formation in the state in the coming days, Mehbooba replied back saying that she is going to New Delhi to take part in the budget session of the parliament that is going to start from February 23. "I have already given questions for the budget session of the parliament and I am going there to take part in parliament proceedings. There is the issue of JNU and also the reservation issue of Jats in Haryana. Let us see how the things unfold in the parliament in the days to come. I will be there to attend the session since I am a member of the parliament," said PDP President. |
