Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Feb 22: The Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) while throwing the ball of Government formation in the court of the Union Government, would wait till the Union budget is tabled in Parliament.
Top party sources divulged that the PDP is eyeing a massive financial announcement for the Jammu and Kashmir State in the Union budget which is being tabled in the Parliament in near future.
As the lull over the deadlock seems to be ending in the State after hectic parleys between the BJP and the PDP were held in the past, the PDP has decided to keep the options open till the Union budget is tabled in Lok Sahba- Parliament's Lower House.
A senior PDP leader said that the party is expecting a major announcement vis-a-vis various developmental works in the State and is hopeful that the financial assistance from the Union Government would be in the offing. He added that already during the secret meets between the party leaders and the BJP, the issue of the financial package has been raised and that the PDP has been assured that a separate announcement would be made during the budget session at the Parliament for Jammu and Kashmir.
The Party, which so far has publically expressed a bit of reluctance in stitching the ground with the BJP again, believes that if a financial assistance for various developmental projects is accorded to the federal Government, it would pave way for the reconciliatory approach at large.
As per the party sources, Mehbooba wants GoI to take atleast some confidence building measures for the State so that the stalemate, which has entered into the second month, could end any further delay.
Sources divulged that though the table work over the Government formation has been completed, the PDP would not reveal its cards till the Union budget is tabled this year. "There have been assurances given that more Central funds will be in the offing for the State of Jammu and Kashmir. The party would keep a wait and watch policy till the Union budget. It is hoped that JK would get a good share in this year's budget," sources said.
Pertinently, there are various developmental projects including the establishment of the medical colleges and some other educational institutions in limbo due to the paucity of funds.
During the deadlock period, the discussions revolved over the failure of the coalition to implement various decisions, which were imperative to catalyse the development process in the State. "There were various discussions over the factors that have left the State cash starved for several years. The Centre has to take some serious measures to mitigate the sufferings of the people and restart the projects that have so far remained shelved due to the dearth of the funds," said a party functionary.
PDP is also eyeing for the nod of the smart city projects for both Jammu and Srinagar. Earlier, these two cities were not included in the list.
