Fall in line or face electorate: Mehbooba's message to BJP

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 22: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday made several significant statements while addressing party workers at Srinagar and occasion was the launch of membership drive. Two statements deserve special attention. One was her statement that "only time can tell" if she would form or not form coalition Government with the BJP. The other was her statement that she "will go against tide if it suits people". Yet another statement which deserves special attention was: "The inheritance of my father is not the chair".
"The inheritance of my father is not the chair. Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's inheritance is so large that it cannot fit in the chair. His inheritance is courage, strength and the love for the people here which he always had in his heart. His inheritance is to tread those roads which nobody dared to tread," she told her party workers.
Mehbooba Mufti didn't speak directly in favour of or against formation of coalition Government with the BJP, but whatever she said was candid, unambiguous and politically very meaningful. Her three cryptic statements once again cleared the air and established that she would re-forge an alliance with the BJP with her own terms and conditions and shall not deviate from the path her father charted for her and the party as early as in 1999, when he founded Peoples Democratic Party.
Her statement that "Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's inheritance is so large than it cannot fit in the (Chief Minister) chair" was her candid response to her critics in the NC, the Congress, and even the BJP, that she cared more for power than for her father's vision for Jammu and Kashmir.
There was a plain-speaking in what she said about the Government formation in the State. She, in fact, rebuffed her critics in the NC and the Congress and plainly told the BJP that if it wanted to do business with the PDP, the BJP leadership has to accept all of her pre-conditions. Politically speaking, she told the BJP to fall in line or get ready for midterm polls.
The very fact that she has been focusing on membership drive across the State since January 31 and constituted election board clearly suggests that she is more concerned with the organizational matters than power, which she could have got a day after her father died at New Delhi.
It is clear from what Mehbooba Mufti said that she was not in haste and that the possibility of the formation of the PDP-BJP coalition Government in the State in the near future is remote. Indeed, she has thrown the ball in the BJP's court. Let's see how the BJP plays the ball.
