Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 26: As the chances of formation of popular Government appear to be dim for now, the former Ministers in PDP-BJP alliance continue to enjoy almost all privileges given to Ministers.
Be that the official accommodation and super facilities therein or the escort and security, everything is in place for them. Few of them are using the siren with their escorts, no matter it looks ridiculous and sounds hollow while they pass through the roads. The moot point is that is the Governor NN Vohra hopeful of early formation of the Government which is why the facilities and privileges are not being withdrawn from the ex Ministers…or is he waiting for their own gesture in not holding these back anymore….?
There are a number of Ministers , in fact all of them from both the parties who have not vacated official bunglows in twin capitals Jammu and Srinagar. Sources in the Estates department said huge money is being spent on upkeep and maintenance of the official residences of the ex Ministers besides providing other facilities in the bunglows. Sources also said continuance of escort by some Ministers for unexplained reasons also means additional burden on exchequer. Though personal staff of the Ministers has been withdrawn from the Ministers, some of them continue to work with ex Ministers, no matter in private capacity, sources said, adding that in all they continue to enjoy the privileges of the Ministers when they are simple MLAs at present.
Sources said while the decision of the present set up under Governor's rule to take decision on trimming wasteful expenditures on ex Ministers, the concerned authorities who have been given powers of such measures too are not taking steps in this direction. While PDP has decided to sit back and let the time pass for unknown and unclear period, BJP too has adopted wait and watch policy, thereby making it abundantly clear that Government formation may not happen anytime soon now. The questions from the general public, if not by the opposition, on continuance of privileges are getting answers from the official sources albeit unofficially, that the administrative authorities do not want to take up cudgels, rather do not want to take any such decision that would displease the political bosses. They fear upon formation of the Government at whatever stage, the steps in terms of withdrawing facilities or undue privileges would build a hostile environment in the political circles against them (administrative authorities), which is why they have chosen silence, sources added.
