JAMMU, Mar 11: Following reports that PDS consumers would be getting wheat instead of atta under NFSA, there has been strong resentment among them, with people holding protests across the state. Terming it anti-people, they have demanded issuance of flour instead of wheat. The previous government had considered NFSA (National Food Security Act) as their biggest achievement. Sources said as per the Act, consumers would get PDS ration at cheaper price but what bothered them was that they would be getting wheat instead of atta. There was strong resentment among them on this account, the sources added. "The flour mills, supplying atta to government, are now not grinding wheat to make atta. Consumers will get it done on their own which will be very inconvenient for them," sources said. Sources said the state governor must find a way out so that people "get atta instead of wheat". "If no heed is paid to the consumers' demand, there will be protests across the state. KPs are already holding protests, demanding that the ration be provided at the old quota of 35 kg. It is pertinent to mention that as in Srinagar people took to streets because there is reduction in quota of rice as they eat rice more than chapattis. In Jammu, consumers are dependent more on atta, so when they get wheat it would come as a shock for them. The consumers took a dig at the previous government for implementing the Act, saying it won't be beneficial for them. CAPD commissioner Sourab Bhagat didn't respond to the repeated phone calls made by this scribe. |
