BJP top brass in touch with Mehbooba | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Mar 11: The Bharatiya Janta Party top brass is in touch with the Peoples Democratic Party President Mehbooba Mufti over government formation in the state, while a top Union minister called on her in the national capital earlier this week, Early Times learnt from reliable sources. The sources said the BJP leadership in New Delhi was in constant touch with Mehbooba and that a top union minister met her on behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the continuance of the alliance in the state. Source said the closed-door meeting, which lasted for over half-an-hour on March 8, remained successful as the BJP minister told Mehbooba that the rightwing party was willing to "provide all support to her in smooth functioning of the government in the state." The minister, as per insiders, told Mehbooba that she should not be apprehensive of how BJP would continue relationship with the PDP after the demise of the then Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed. However, sources said Mehbooba stuck to her words that she would assume power only if people of the state of Jammu and Kashmir on the whole would be benefitted out of the alliance. Mehbooba is understood to have told BJP that she was not against alliance but that the commitment her party made to people over developments needs to be fulfilled without any further delay. Sources said the PDP's demand of CBMs was also discussed threadbare while "some consensus was achieved on the much awaited return of Salal power project to the state." Sources said the meeting between the PDP supremo and the BJP minister was facilitated jointly by senor leaders including Ram Madhav and Avinash Rai Khanna, who wanted the talks to remain secret. PDP sources however said Mehbooba, who has returned from New Delhi, was there to attend the Parliament session and that meeting if any held with the BJP leadership was a "coincidence and courtesy call." The sources said the BJP doesn't want to lose the "golden opportunity" to rule the state, and thus is making every effort to convince Mehbooba. For BJP, the first impression of its governance, particularly in Jammu, the region which voted the party to power, has been a total flop show. While the party failed to deliver on commitments over developmental front, the BJP is equally is accused of having hurt the sentiments of millions of devotees when tax was unilaterally imposed on the Mata Vaishnu Devi pilgrimage. The then BJP ministers in the state cabinet didn't utter a word to get the orders revoked. Otherwise also the general perception among the people of Jammu is that the BJP ministers "proved a power-hungry coterie which remained concerned but only about their personal interests." Instead of having geared up the work no artificial lake on Tawi and upgradation of the Jammu airport, the two major projects faced hiccups in the previous regime. On the other hand the demand for the establishment of much-needed AIIMS in the region remains a distant dream. "Amid so many failures the BJP has no option but to continue alliance to undo the ills of the first stint," the insiders said. J&K has been under Governor rule since January 9, when after Mufti's demise his daughter remained hesitant to take oath. |
