srinagar, Mar 11: As predicted by MeT office here, Kashmir Valley in plains started receiving fresh spell of rain while hilly areas witnessed snow on Friday while famous tourist resort Gulmarg received moderate snowfall. Meanwhile Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SANSE) has issued an advisory to people in upper reaches about medium danger avalanche that may exist in avalanche prone areas above 3,000 metres A MeT official told the weather activity is likely to intensify on Saturday and there will be heavy spell of rain. In wake of the activity, day temperatures have already come down and are likely to settle below normal during next two days. "This widespread activity can be attributed to active Western Disturbance presently marked over North Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir. The system is moving in east direction and will soon start covering more parts of the hilly region." The weather models indicate, expected heavy rains may lead to landslides, flashfloods and even a cloudburst too. Moreover, higher reaches are reeling under the threat of avalanche. This fresh wet spell will last for three days till Sunday. Monday onwards, rains will take a backseat as the Western Disturbance will move away from the region and clear weather will prevail over the region thereafter. However after a brief respite of only 2-3 days, another Western Disturbance is likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir by March 16. According to MeT office, Kupwara received maximum rainfall of 21mm, Batote 11mm, Banihar 20mm, Badherwah 12mm, Pahalgam 16mm, Kokarnag 9mm, Qazigund 13mm, Srinagar 12mm and Jammu received 4mm rainfall while tourist resort Gulmarg received moderate snowfall where tourists were seen enjoying throughout the day. Meanwhile, Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) issued an avalanche warning for higher areas of Jammu and Kashmir and asked people to refrain from venturing out in avalanche prone areas next 48 hours. Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SANSE) which is the part of the Defence Research and Development Organisation issued an advisory warning people about medium danger avalanche that may exist in avalanche prone areas above 3,000 Mtrs in Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipur, Kargil, Shopian, Anantnag, Kulgam, Rajauri, Doda and Poonch districts of Jammu and Kashmir. MeT office has already predicted three days continuous rainfall across Kashmir starting from Friday while it has also predicted moderate to heavy snowfall in upper reaches in Jammu and Kashmir. |
